A percentage expresses a number as a fraction of 100. Percentages are used for discounts, tax rates, interest rates, test scores, and statistical comparisons in everyday life.
To find what percentage one number is of another: (part ÷ whole) × 100. To find a percentage of a number: (percentage ÷ 100) × number. For example, 20% of 500 = 100.
Percentage change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ Old Value) × 100. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease from the original value.
Percentage difference compares two values without a clear reference: (|A − B| ÷ ((A + B) ÷ 2)) × 100. This differs from percentage change which always uses the original value as the reference.
